Following the disaster of last month’s mini-Budget, Liz Truss’s premiership is now hanging by a thread. The sacking of Kwasi Kwarteng and his replacement by Jeremy Hunt appears to have not placated many of Truss’s critics on the Tory benches. Veteran backbencher Crispin Blunt became the first elected member of her party to call for her to quit on Sunday with others now breaking cover to voice their concerns too. Keep track of all the MPs calling on Truss to go here on Coffee House.
- Crispin Blunt – ‘The game is up.’
- Andrew Bridgen – ‘Liz has sunk her own leadership and her predecessor’s potential comeback at the same time, all in record time.’
- Jamie Wallis – ‘In recent weeks, I have watched as the Government has undermined Britain’s economic credibility & fractured our Party irreparably. Enough is enough.’
- Angela Richardson – It is ‘no longer tenable’ for her to remain.
- Charles Walker – ‘If she doesn’t go right now, it won’t be her decision.’
- Steve Double – Liz Truss‘s position is ‘increasingly untenable’ and she will have to ‘consider her position’.
- William Wragg – ‘I am personally ashamed because I cannot go and face my constituents, look them in the eye and say that they should support our great party.’
- Gary Streeter – ‘Sadly, it seems we must change leader.’
- Sheryll Murray – ‘I had high hopes for Liz Truss, but after what happened last night her position has become untenable and I have submitted a letter to Sir Graham Brady.’
- Miriam Cates – ‘It seems untenable…and yes, I do think it’s time for the Prime Minister to go.’
- Matthew Offord – ‘She does need to sit down and discuss it with her Cabinet and with others to manage some kind of dignified exit.’
- Henry Smith – The Tory Party ‘can’t delay’ in removing Liz Truss as Prime Minister. ‘I think we need new leadership…’
- Jill Mortimer – ‘I have no confidence in the competence of the current Prime Minister Liz Truss. I would like to add my support to the call for a vote of no confidence.’
- Ruth Edwards – ‘Step aside, go, and let someone who is up to the task take on the great privilege and responsibility of leading our great country and party. ‘
